Why Telugu Families Choose Austin

The career case for Austin is unambiguous. Dell Technologies’ global headquarters sits in Round Rock, the city where Telugu families have been settling since the 1990s. Apple’s Parmer Lane campus — opened in 2022, accommodating up to 15,000 workers — sits squarely on the Williamson County border, a short drive from Cedar Park and Round Rock subdivisions. Samsung Austin Semiconductor (4,300+ employees) anchors the northeast Austin corridor, feeding the Pflugerville and Hutto communities. Oracle relocated its headquarters to Austin in 2020, bringing thousands of tech roles. Add NXP Semiconductors and National Instruments, and you have one of the most Telugu-dense tech employment corridors in the country outside the Bay Area and DFW.

The school district quality compounds the draw. Leander ISD — serving Cedar Park, Leander, and Georgetown — and Round Rock ISD are consistently rated among the top districts in Texas. Both have growing Indian student populations; schools near the Parmer Lane corridor report South Asian enrollment approaching 15–20% at some campuses. Texas has no state income tax, which meaningfully increases take-home pay for tech workers comparing offers across metros.

Community infrastructure that took DFW and Houston decades to build has arrived in Austin rapidly. The Balaji Temple in Cedar Park has served the community since 1989. TCA Austin runs a full cultural calendar spanning both Andhra and Telangana traditions. The commercial spine along I-35 in Round Rock now has multiple Telugu-friendly restaurants and Indian grocery stores — including two new stores opening in 2024–2025 specifically because of the community’s growth.

Where Telugu Families Live

The geographic pattern of Telugu settlement in Austin is unusually coherent: the community has essentially claimed the entire Williamson County tech corridor, from Far North Austin northward through Cedar Park and Round Rock to the fast-growing Leander–Georgetown frontier. Travis County, by contrast, skews North Indian and Hindi-speaking. This clean split makes neighborhood selection straightforward for Telugu newcomers.

Cedar Park & Leander — Highest Telugu Density

The Cedar Park/Leander PUMA records 3,089 Telugu-speaking households — the community’s largest single concentration in the Austin metro. Telugu is the #2 language here, ahead of Chinese. The Balaji Temple on New Hope Drive, Naga’s South Indian Cuisine on Whitestone Boulevard, the Desi District grocer-restaurant on Parmer Lane, and the Kala Deepika Kuchipudi Dance Academy in Leander all sit within this zone. The Apple campus on Parmer Lane pulls thousands of tech workers into neighborhoods along FM 1431, Whitestone Boulevard, and Anderson Mill Road. Leander ISD serves this corridor. Newer housing makes this the preferred landing zone for families joining in the last 3–5 years.

Round Rock — Dell’s Commercial Spine

The Round Rock PUMA shows 1,306 Telugu-speaking households with Telugu again as the #2 language. Dell Technologies’ global headquarters is the anchor employer — its Round Rock campus is the largest single employer in Williamson County. The I-35 corridor (South and North I-35 Frontage Roads, Mays Street) is the commercial spine: Rock N Grill Indian Cuisine on Mays Street, Sri Krishna Indian Cuisine on South I-35, Sangam Chettinad and Subham Chettinad on the south end, Aapka Bazaar and the new Naya Bazaar on the commercial strips. Round Rock ISD schools are well-resourced. This is the most established Telugu commercial zone in the Austin metro.

Brushy Creek / Far North Austin — Largest India-Born PUMA

The Brushy Creek/Jollyville/Far North Austin PUMA records 3,181 Telugu-speaking households (the #3 language in this PUMA) and is remarkable for another reason: 9,600 India-born residents — the single largest India-born concentration in the entire Austin metro. This corridor runs along Parmer Lane (connecting to both Apple campus and the NW Austin tech cluster), MoPac/Loop 1 North, and Highway 183 North. Godavari Austin on Ranch Road 620 and Gandhi Bazar (two locations) serve this population. This is Austin’s most established older Indian neighborhood — many families have lived here 10–15+ years.

Pflugerville & Hutto — Samsung Corridor

Samsung Austin Semiconductor’s northeast Austin campus pulls engineers into Pflugerville and Hutto — lower-cost suburbs east of Round Rock. Pflugerville’s population has grown over 300% since 2000 and is rapidly diversifying. Telugu commercial infrastructure is less developed here than in Round Rock or Cedar Park, but the proximity to Round Rock’s I-35 corridor makes it viable. Many families who start in Pflugerville for affordability transition to Round Rock or Cedar Park as they establish roots.

Georgetown — Northernmost Frontier

Georgetown is the fastest-growing city in Texas, and Telugu families are moving north with the growth wave. The Hari Hara Kshethram temple on King Rea Road, opened in 2024, signals meaningful community presence. Desi Brothers has specifically announced a Leander location (1520 Arrowfeather Pass, 15,000 sq ft grocery + restaurant) targeting this corridor. Georgetown is ~30 miles from central Austin but offers newer housing, Leander ISD access from some zones, and significantly lower costs than established Cedar Park neighborhoods.

Telugu Organizations & Associations

Telugu Cultural Association of Austin (TCA Austin)

TCA Austin is the anchor cultural organization for the Austin Telugu community — a 501(c)(3) non-profit operating for over 33 years. It explicitly represents both Andhra Pradesh and Telangana traditions. The annual event calendar includes Ugadi Sambaraalu (Telugu New Year), Sri Rama Navami, Dasara, Deepavali, the TCA Sports Meet (volleyball, throwball, chess, spellbee), women’s programs, and literary events. Telangana American Telugu Association (TTA) — Austin Chapter

The TTA Austin chapter focuses specifically on Telangana state cultural identity — filling a distinct gap for families from Hyderabad, Warangal, Karimnagar, and the rest of Telangana who celebrate different traditions than AP Telugu families. Its signature event is Bathukamma Dasara Sambaralu — the floral offering ceremony celebrating womanhood and harvest that defines Telangana’s cultural calendar. The 2024 Bathukamma event was held at Austin Hindu Temple (9801 Decker Lake Rd). TTA also organizes Bonalu and Telangana Formation Day celebrations. → mytelanganaus.org

NATA Austin Chapter (North American Telugu Association)

NATA, founded nationally in 2013, markets itself as the largest Telugu organization in North America. The Austin chapter connects local Telugu residents to the broader continental Telugu network and has hosted events including International Women’s Day programs (2023). NATA’s strength is its professional-class networking connections across the US Telugu diaspora. The biennial national convention draws Telugu Americans from across the country. → nataus.org | NATA Austin on Facebook

Telugu Association of North America (TANA)

TANA, founded in 1977, is the oldest Indo-American organization in North America. It operates primarily at the national level, with a biennial convention drawing 10,000+ attendees (the 24th TANA Conference in 2025 was held at the Pennsylvania Convention Center). The Austin connection includes a Telugu Sahitya Vybhavam literary event held in 2019. For Austin Telugu residents, TANA matters most for national conference participation rather than local programming — TCA Austin handles the day-to-day community calendar. → tana.org

SiliconAndhra ManaBadi — Austin Area

ManaBadi is the national standard for Telugu heritage education in America — a non-profit, ACS-WASC accredited program with 95,000+ students across 250+ US locations. Texas accepts ManaBadi credits as World Language Credits (WLC) toward high school graduation requirements, making enrollment especially valuable for Telugu families in Round Rock ISD and Leander ISD. The year-long curriculum (September–May, two semesters) covers Telugu reading, writing, and cultural immersion from kindergarten through high school. Programs include stage plays, poetry workshops, and debate competitions. In-person and online options available.
