Telugu Community in Bay Area
30,000 Telugu speakers • SiliconAndhra headquarters • BATA est. 1971 • 4 Guinness World Records for Kuchipudi
The Bay Area is where Telugu America was built. SiliconAndhra — the world’s largest Telugu language education program — was founded in Milpitas. BATA has served the community since 1971. An estimated 30,000 Telugu speakers (ACS 2022) live across the South Bay and Tri-Cities corridor, drawn by the same force that built Silicon Valley itself: the H-1B tech pipeline from Hyderabad to Sunnyvale.

Why Telugu Families Choose the Bay Area
The Telugu-Bay Area connection is inseparable from the tech industry. Since the 1990s H-1B boom, engineers from Hyderabad, Visakhapatnam, and cities across Andhra Pradesh and Telangana have poured into Silicon Valley’s tech companies. The pipeline runs directly: degree from JNTU, BITS, or an IIT, H-1B sponsorship from a Bay Area employer, apartment in Sunnyvale or Fremont, green card, house in Dublin or Milpitas. Repeat at scale for three decades.
Telugu is now the fastest-growing language in America, surging from 320,000 speakers nationwide in 2016 to 1.23 million in 2024 — an 86% increase between 2010 and 2017 alone. California has roughly 200,000 Telugu speakers (ACS 2022), more than any other state, and the Bay Area is the epicenter. The community is so established that SiliconAndhra — the world’s largest Telugu language education nonprofit, with 250+ locations in 35 states — was founded right here in Milpitas.
What keeps Telugu families here despite the cost is the combination: the highest-paying tech jobs in the world, a Telugu community infrastructure that rivals Hyderabad (associations, temples, language schools, Tollywood screenings, Andhra restaurants), and the knowledge that your neighbors, your kids’ classmates, and your coworkers understand exactly where you come from — whether that’s Warangal or Vijayawada, Andhra or Telangana.
Where Telugu Families Live in the Bay Area
The Bay Area has over 172,000 India-born residents, but “Indian” is not one community. Census language data reveals that Telugu families concentrate in the eastern South Bay and Tri-Cities corridor, while Tamil speakers are stronger in the western/central Silicon Valley areas (Cupertino, Mountain View, Palo Alto). Here is where Telugu speakers actually live, based on U.S. Census American Community Survey 2019–2023 PUMA data.
Fremont (Southeast) — The Telugu Capital of the Bay Area (4,551 Telugu speakers (ACS 2022))
Fremont SE is the single largest concentration of Telugu speakers in the Bay Area and one of the largest in America. With 25,905 India-born residents (22.4% of the population), this is the most Indian suburb in the entire Bay Area. Telugu (4,551) is the clear #2 Indian language behind Hindi (11,793), ahead of Tamil (4,169). Median household income: $179,983. This is where you’ll find the densest network of Telugu cultural infrastructure — Karya Siddhi Hanuman Temple (SGS Datta Peetham), Telugu Christian churches, Kuchipudi dance schools, and ManaBadi Telugu language classes at nearly every middle and high school in Fremont USD.
Pleasanton & Dublin — The Telugu Growth Corridor (3,872 Telugu speakers (ACS 2022))
Pleasanton and Dublin have the highest Telugu concentration relative to other Indian languages in the Bay Area. Telugu (3,872) nearly matches Hindi (4,102) here — the closest any Bay Area suburb comes to Telugu dominance. This is the Tri-Valley tech corridor, with families drawn by top-rated Dublin USD and Pleasanton USD schools, newer housing stock, and a suburban feel. Median household income: $179,294, homeownership: 64.1%. The Greater Tri-Valley Telugu Association (GTTA, founded 2017) serves this area specifically. TCA organizes East Bay Bathukamma celebrations in San Ramon.
Sunnyvale — The South Bay Telugu Hub (3,412 Telugu speakers (ACS 2022))
Sunnyvale is where many Telugu H-1B arrivals first land — apartment complexes near the tech campuses of Google, Apple, LinkedIn, and dozens of IT consulting firms. Telugu (3,412) is the #3 Indian language here behind Hindi (7,587) and Tamil (3,448). This is also the Andhra restaurant capital of the Bay Area: El Camino Real between Sunnyvale and Santa Clara has the densest concentration of Andhra restaurants outside India, including UlavacharU, Bawarchi, Pista House, and Swathi Tiffins. India Cash & Carry on El Camino Real is the go-to for Telugu groceries. Median household income: $182,864.
Newark, Union City & Fremont (West) — (3,298 Telugu speakers (ACS 2022))
Telugu (3,298) is the #2 Indian language here, in a diverse corridor that also includes significant Punjabi (3,228) and Gujarati (1,331) populations. This area offers the highest homeownership rate (73.7%) among Bay Area Indian communities, with median household income of $176,133 (ACS 2022). More affordable than Fremont SE or Sunnyvale, making it attractive for Telugu families buying their first home.
Santa Clara & Milpitas — (5,808 Telugu speakers (ACS 2022) combined)
Santa Clara City has 3,061 Telugu speakers (ACS 2022) and Milpitas/Berryessa has 2,747. Both are major tech employment centers. SiliconAndhra’s headquarters and Aria University are in Milpitas. Sri Satyanarayana Swamy Devasthanam, the most overtly Telugu-identified temple in the Bay Area, is also in Milpitas. Milpitas has a uniquely multicultural character with large Vietnamese (13%) and Chinese (15%) populations alongside the Indian community. Serra Theatres and Cinemark Century Great Mall 20 in Milpitas are the main Telugu movie screening venues.
Where Telugu Is NOT the Dominant Community
The western/central Silicon Valley corridor is Tamil-dominant territory. In Cupertino, Saratoga, and Los Gatos, Tamil (3,779) outpaces Telugu (2,470) as the #2 Indian language. In Mountain View and Los Altos, Tamil (1,160) leads Telugu (390) by 3:1. Palo Alto has just 248 Telugu speakers (ACS 2022). The geographic pattern is clear: Telugu families concentrate east (Fremont, Dublin, Milpitas, Santa Clara), while Tamil and Malayalam/Kannada speakers are stronger in the west (Cupertino, Mountain View, Palo Alto). If you are Telugu and choosing a suburb, the Fremont–Dublin–Milpitas–Sunnyvale corridor is where your community is strongest.
