Indian Community in Austin

65,000–75,000 Indian-Americans and one of the fastest-growing Indian communities in the country. The tech boom that brought Tesla, Apple, Oracle, Samsung, and Google to Central Texas has made Austin a magnet for Indian professionals — but Austin’s Indian community is not one community. Telugu, Tamil, Gujarati, Hindi-speaking, Malayali, Kannada, and Marathi families have each built their own cultural infrastructure here.

Why Austin?

Austin’s Indian population has roughly doubled every decade since 2000, driven by the relentless expansion of the tech sector. Dell seeded the first wave in Round Rock. Then came Samsung’s semiconductor fab, Apple’s 133-acre North Austin campus, Tesla’s Gigafactory, Oracle’s HQ relocation from Silicon Valley, and Google’s downtown engineering office. Today Austin’s Asian population is growing at 96% per decade — the fastest rate of any major Texas metro.

The financial case is clear: Texas has no state income tax, saving a family earning $200,000 roughly $10,000–$17,000 annually compared to California. Median home prices in Round Rock ($375K–$385K) and Pflugerville ($346K–$412K) are a fraction of Bay Area equivalents. H-1B salaries at Austin’s top sponsors average $145,000–$183,000 — comparable to coastal pay. Round Rock ISD has 22% Asian enrollment. Eanes ISD is ranked #1 in Texas. And unlike DFW or Houston, Austin has a college-town energy, live music culture, and outdoor lifestyle that appeals to younger Indian professionals.

Where Indian Communities Cluster in Austin

Austin’s Indian community concentrates in the northern suburbs, following the tech campuses along I-35, US-183, and Parmer Lane. But different communities settle in different pockets depending on their employers, temples, and cultural anchors.

Cedar Park: The highest Indian concentration of any Austin suburb — 6.9% of 77,500 residents. Home to Sri Venkateswara Temple of Austin (the go-to South Indian temple), this is the primary hub for Telugu and Tamil families near the Apple and Samsung campuses. The Ranch at Brushy Creek subdivision is popular with Indian families. Leander ISD (A-rated, 16.7% Asian enrollment) serves this area.

Round Rock: Where Austin’s Indian community first took root, anchored by Dell Technologies’ HQ. The Avery Ranch subdivision is known locally as “mini India.” The annual Round Rock Diwali Festival is the largest in the metro. Round Rock ISD has 22% Asian enrollment district-wide (28.7% at Round Rock High). Strong for Telugu, Hindi-speaking, and Tamil families. Median home ~$375K–$385K.

North Austin (Parmer Lane / The Domain): The urban Indian corridor. Apple, Google, IBM, and Oracle campuses are here. The Parmer Lane strip has a dense cluster of Indian restaurants. Gandhi Bazar (Austin’s largest Indian grocery) is on Spicewood Springs Rd. ISKCON Austin is on North I-35. Mixed South Indian community — Telugu, Tamil, Kannada, and Malayali families all present.

Pflugerville: The value pick. Median home $346K–$412K — 20–30% less than Cedar Park for comparable homes. Growing South Asian community. Pflugerville ISD has 9.1% Asian enrollment. Best for families balancing budget and proximity to the tech corridor.

Leander: Fast-growing, newer construction. Popular with Gujarati and Hindi-speaking families seeking larger lots at accessible prices ($410K–$465K median). Leander ISD is A-rated. Quieter suburban feel with longer commute to central Austin.

The right suburb depends on your community. Explore the guides below to see exactly where your people have settled.

Job Market & H-1B Sponsorship

Austin is one of the top H-1B markets in the country. In FY2025, Austin’s top 20 H-1B sponsors filed over 5,500 LCA applications. The combination of Silicon Valley transplants and homegrown giants creates massive demand for Indian tech talent.

Amazon leads with 1,196 LCA filings (avg. $145,715). Apple filed 895 LCAs (avg. $182,658 — highest among major sponsors). Tesla (434 LCAs), AMD (426 LCAs, avg. $162,667), Visa Inc. (313 LCAs), Google (225 LCAs), TCS (316 LCAs), Infosys (246 LCAs). Dell Technologies (Round Rock) — 13,000+ local employees. Samsung Austin Semiconductor — ~5,000 employees, plus a $17B fab expansion in Taylor, TX. UT Austin sponsors 269 cap-exempt H-1B positions.

Salary ranges: Software Engineer (mid-level) $126,000–$145,000. Senior: ~$199,000. Apple and Arm average $182,000–$185,000. IT consulting (TCS, Infosys, Wipro) $90,000–$116,000. These are near Bay Area base salaries — with no state income tax and housing at 40–60% of Bay Area prices.

Cost of Living

Austin has gotten more expensive, but still offers strong value versus coastal metros — and Texas’s zero state income tax saves a family earning $200,000 roughly $10,000–$17,000 per year versus California.

Rent: Round Rock 2BR ~$1,395–$1,600/mo. Cedar Park 2BR ~$1,600–$1,900/mo. Pflugerville 2BR ~$1,500/mo. Austin dropped ~6% year-over-year in 2025 due to new construction — about half the Bay Area and 20–30% below NYC/NJ.

Home prices: Pflugerville ~$346K–$412K (best value). Round Rock ~$375K–$385K. Leander ~$410K–$465K. Cedar Park ~$458K–$485K. Austin city ~$550K. Eanes/Westlake $800K–$2.6M+ (top schools). A comparable Bay Area home exceeds $1.5M.

Property taxes: Texas has no state income tax but property taxes run ~1.7–1.8% effective rate. A $400,000 home carries ~$6,800–$7,200/year. Properties in newer MUD developments can run higher. The overall tax picture is substantially better than California, NJ, or NY for most Indian tech professionals.

Climate: Austin vs. Home

Austin’s climate is one of its biggest draws. Summers are seriously hot, but winters are mild, and you can be outdoors year-round.

From Hyderabad: Your closest climate match in the US. Summer highs of 35–36°C are comparable to Hyderabad’s pre-monsoon peaks. Austin winters (lows ~6°C) are colder but very manageable. No monsoon — rainfall is spread through the year.

From Delhi: Austin summers are hot but less extreme than Delhi’s 45°C+ furnace. Winters are much milder — snow is virtually nonexistent (the 2021 winter storm was once-in-a-generation). A climate upgrade from Delhi.

From Mumbai or Chennai: Austin’s humidity will feel familiar, but summers are significantly hotter. Winters bring temperatures below 10°C from December through February — a bigger adjustment than climate, but nothing like Chicago or NJ.

From Bangalore: Austin is hotter than Bangalore in every season. You will rely on air conditioning from May through October. Plan to adjust.

Cedar Fever: From December through February, mountain cedar pollen creates intense allergy season. This doesn’t exist in India and catches many newcomers off guard. Over-the-counter antihistamines help. Most people develop tolerance after a few years.

Practical Information

Flights to India

Austin-Bergstrom (AUS) has no nonstop flights to India. Best options: British Airways daily nonstop to London Heathrow (connecting to Delhi, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Bangalore, Chennai) and Lufthansa nonstop to Frankfurt. Through US hubs, United and American connect to Delhi via Newark, Chicago, Dallas, and Houston. Emirates (Dubai), Qatar Airways (Doha), and Turkish Airlines (Istanbul) available with a domestic connection. Typical total travel time: 20–28 hours. Round-trip fares: $700–$1,200 economy.

Driver’s License

New Texas residents must obtain a Texas driver’s license within 90 days. You’ll need proof of lawful presence, identity, Social Security card, and two documents showing your Texas address. Appointments required through the DPS website. As of May 2025, Texas requires REAL ID-compliant licenses (gold star) for boarding domestic flights. Austin is car-dependent — a license is essential.

Banking & Money Transfers

No local branches of SBI or ICICI in Austin. Most Indian families use Chase, Bank of America, Wells Fargo, or Capital One. NRI accounts at SBI and ICICI can be managed online. For sending money to India, Wise and Remitly offer the best exchange rates.
