Sindhi Community in Seattle

Sindhi Association of Seattle est. 2023 • Bellevue–Redmond–Kirkland Eastside • Chetichand & Sindhi Cultural Day • 16,000+ India-born in Greater Bellevue • SANA national affiliate

Seattle’s Sindhi community is centered on the Bellevue–Redmond–Kirkland Eastside tech corridor — the same geography that draws Indian tech workers to Microsoft, Amazon, and a constellation of cloud and software companies. The anchor institution is the Sindhi Association of Seattle (est. 2023, Bellevue), the Pacific Northwest’s first formally organized Sindhi 501(c)(3) nonprofit, which celebrates Chetichand (Jhulelal Jayanti) as Sindhi New Year and is actively fundraising for a dedicated Jhulelal Mandir. The broader Eastside has 16,000+ India-born residents in Greater Bellevue alone (ACS 2022) and two well-stocked Indian groceries in Bellevue and Redmond. Sindhi professionals align naturally with this corridor’s tech industry — the community counts Ashish Vaswani, first author of the “Attention Is All You Need” Transformer paper, and Sabeer Bhatia, co-founder of Hotmail, among its national figures.

Why Sindhi Families Choose Seattle

The Sindhi community has a well-documented affinity for tech entrepreneurship and business — and Seattle’s Eastside is one of the most concentrated tech employment zones on earth. Microsoft’s global headquarters in Redmond, Amazon’s operations in Bellevue, and dozens of tech companies in the surrounding corridor create the exact employment density that draws Sindhi software engineers, product managers, and IT professionals. The Pacific Northwest tech sector also supports entrepreneurship: Sindhi families who have built businesses in NJ, Texas, and Chicago are increasingly exploring the Seattle market as well.

Schools are a major factor. The Bellevue School District and Lake Washington School District (covering Redmond and Kirkland) consistently rank among Washington state’s highest-performing districts and are magnets for Indian immigrant families prioritizing education. The Eastside’s infrastructure for the Indian community — Indian grocery stores, temples, cultural organizations — has grown substantially since 2010, driven by the tripling of the Asian Indian population in King County each decade since 1990. As of 2018, one in three Bellevue residents was born outside the United States.

A candid note for newcomers: Seattle’s Sindhi community is smaller and more recently organized than Sindhi communities in New Jersey, DFW, or Chicago. The Sindhi Association of Seattle was incorporated in 2023 — the community is coalescing, not yet fully established. If you are looking for a large Sindhi enclave with a dedicated temple and dense network, NJ or DFW will feel more immediately familiar. If you are joining the Eastside tech economy and want to connect with a growing, tight-knit Sindhi community, Seattle is building something real.

Where Sindhi Families Live in the Seattle Area

The Seattle Sindhi community is distributed across the Eastside — there is no single Sindhi enclave or neighborhood. Settlement follows the broader Indian tech worker pattern: proximity to employers, top-ranked school districts, and the Indian community infrastructure that has grown on the Eastside since the 1990s.

Bellevue — Primary Hub (16,000+ India-Born Residents)

Bellevue is the center of the Seattle Sindhi community and of the Eastside Indian community overall. The Crossroads neighborhood (near Crossroads Shopping Center, NE 24th St corridor) is the closest thing to an Indian commercial hub: Swagath Indian Grocery & Restaurant, the Bellevue Hindu Temple and Cultural Center, and multiple Indian restaurants are all within a short radius. The Sindhi Association of Seattle is registered at a Bellevue address (4232 146th Ave SE), confirming Bellevue as the community’s center of gravity. Bellevue School District is one of the primary reasons Sindhi families with school-age children choose Bellevue over other Eastside cities.

Redmond — Microsoft Corridor (13,700+ India-Born in Redmond/Kirkland)

Redmond is driven by Microsoft’s global headquarters and the surrounding tech campus ecosystem. Sindhi tech professionals at Microsoft naturally cluster here. The Swagath Indian Grocery Store on NE 76th St serves the Redmond corridor directly, and Mayuri grocery is relocating to a larger Redmond location near NE 24th St and 148th Ave NE. Lake Washington School District covers Redmond and Kirkland and consistently posts top academic results — a major settlement factor for Sindhi families with children.

Kirkland — Secondary Eastside Zone

A smaller Indian presence than Bellevue or Redmond, but part of the same Eastside corridor. Kirkland attracts some Sindhi families who want proximity to Redmond employers while finding slightly more affordable housing than central Bellevue. Lake Washington School District coverage makes Kirkland a viable option for families prioritizing schools. Community events and Indian cultural infrastructure are a short drive away in Bellevue and Redmond.

Sindhi Organizations in Seattle

Sindhi Association of Seattle, WA

Instagram: @seattlesindhis • Facebook Group: “Seattle Sindhis” (facebook.com/groups/44323857367) • EIN: 92-3486250 • Registered: Bellevue, WA

Incorporated in April 2023 as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, the Sindhi Association of Seattle is the only dedicated Sindhi community organization in the Pacific Northwest. It is headquartered in Bellevue and is the first contact for any Sindhi newcomer to the area. Mission: bring the Sindhi community together and create awareness of Sindhi culture, while supporting underprivileged children within and beyond the community.

Current activities: Festival celebrations (Chetichand, Sindhi Cultural Day), cultural events, regular family meetups, help for newly arriving Sindhi families with settlement support, and youth programming to connect American-born kids with Sindhi roots, language, and festivals. Future goals: Organizing fundraising for a dedicated Jhulelal Mandir and Festival Hall — a stated community priority that would transform the Sindhi community’s visibility and gathering capacity on the Eastside. As a 2023 organization, the event calendar is still building. Follow @seattlesindhis on Instagram for current programming.

Sindhi Association of North America (SANA)

Indian American Community Services (IACS)

Website: iacswa.org • Formerly: India Association of Western Washington (IAWW)

The longest-serving Indian community organization in the Pacific Northwest, IACS provides broad infrastructure for all Indian sub-communities on the Eastside: Holi, Diwali Bazaar, IACS Night Market (Bellevue), community health fair, mental health conference, women’s career services, small business support, and legal support programs. IACS operates out of North Bellevue Community Center, Redmond Center, Sammamish Beaver Lake Lodge, and other Eastside venues. Sindhi families participate in all IACS programming and connect with the broader 60,000+ Indian American community in King County through this network.

Temples & Houses of Worship

There is no dedicated Jhulelal/Sindhi temple in the Seattle area as of early 2026. The Sindhi Association of Seattle is actively fundraising toward one. In the interim, Sindhi families worship at the Eastside’s established pan-Hindu temples, with two institutions of particular significance for the Sindhi community.

HTCC is particularly significant for the Sindhi community because it holds regular Sri Shirdi Sai Baba services — Sai Baba veneration is central to Sindhi Hindu religious practice. Programs include Hanuman Chalisa, Veda Classes, monthly abhishekams, and regular puja services. Contact HTCC directly to confirm Chetichand or Jhulelal-specific observances.

Sindhi Food & Indian Grocery Stores

No dedicated Sindhi restaurant exists in the Seattle area. Sindhi home cooking — sai bhaji, Sindhi kadhi, dal pakwan, seyal maani, thadri, papad ro tarkari — is primarily shared at community gatherings organized by the Sindhi Association of Seattle. For commercial options, the Eastside has one distinctive alternative.

Shef — Homemade Sindhi Food Delivery

Website: shef.com/homemade-food-delivery/seattle-wa/sindhi-cuisine

Shef is a chef-to-consumer marketplace connecting food-safety certified personal chefs with customers for weekly home-cooked meal delivery. The platform explicitly lists homemade Sindhi cuisine delivery in Seattle, WA, including dairy-free Sindhi options. Dishes can include sai bhaji, Sindhi kadhi, dal pakwan, seyal maani, and traditional home-style cooking. Individual chef availability varies — visit the site to see current active Sindhi chefs in the Seattle area. For newcomers missing home cooking, this is the most practical commercial option.

Indian Grocery Stores

Sindhi families on the Eastside are well-served by two Swagath locations and Mayuri for traditional pantry staples (besan, methi, drumsticks, papads, Sindhi masalas, lentils):

  • Swagath Indian Grocery & Restaurant (Bellevue): 14504 NE 20th St, Suite 101, Bellevue, WA 98007 • (425) 214-5800 • swagathstores.com • Daily 10 AM–10 PM — Full-service Indian grocery plus restaurant; one of the top-rated Indian groceries in Bellevue; fresh Indian vegetables and South Asian snacks.

  • Mayuri (Redmond): mayuriseattle.com • New location: NE 24th St and 148th Ave NE, Redmond (across from Fred Meyer/Overlake) — Indian and Asian grocery; fresh, frozen, dine-in, and grab-and-go options; relocating to a larger Redmond space.

Online delivery for specialty Sindhi items also available through Weee! and Quicklly for the Bellevue area.

Sindhi Language & Schools

No in-person Sindhi language classes exist in the Seattle area as of early 2026. Given the Sindhi Association of Seattle’s 2023 founding, this is expected — but the association has stated a goal of eventually offering cultural and language programming for American-born kids.

  • SANA Sindhi Online Language School (SOLS): sanaonline.org/sols/ • Operated by the Sindhi Association of North America; online, semester registration, all levels; curriculum focused on Reading, Speaking, and Listening referenced to the Sindh board. This is the primary practical option for Seattle Sindhi families seeking structured language instruction for their children.
  • Sindhi Association of Seattle — Future Programming: The association has expressed intent to provide a platform for American-born kids to learn Sindhi language and culture. Follow @seattlesindhis on Instagram for announcements when local programming launches.

Sindhi Arts & Culture in Seattle

Chetichand (Jhulelal Jayanti) — Sindhi New Year

Chetichand marks the birth anniversary of Jhulelal, the patron saint of Sindhis, and is celebrated as Sindhi New Year. It follows the Hindu lunar calendar and typically falls in March–April (2025: March 30; 2026: late March). Traditional observances include the Bahrano Sahib procession (a decorated palanquin carrying the Jhulelal idol), devotional bhajans, community feasting, and cultural performances. The Sindhi Association of Seattle lists Chetichand as a priority celebration and is actively fundraising for a dedicated festival venue. Given the association’s 2023 founding, current Chetichand gatherings are likely intimate community events — contact the association via @seattlesindhis to learn about upcoming celebrations and to be included in the community network.

Sindhi Cultural Day

Celebrated on the first Sunday of December worldwide, Sindhi Cultural Day is marked by wearing the Ajrak (a traditional block-printed shawl) and Sindhi Topi (cap), along with cultural programs and community gatherings. The day is observed globally as a moment of Sindhi identity and pride. In Seattle, it is observed informally by the community; follow @seattlesindhis for any organized events as the Sindhi Association grows its programming calendar.

Sindhi Community Legacy in Tech

For context on why the Sindhi community has a natural affinity for Seattle’s tech corridor: Sindhi Americans have made foundational contributions to modern technology. Sabeer Bhatia co-founded Hotmail. Ashish Vaswani is the first author of “Attention Is All You Need” — the 2017 paper that introduced the Transformer architecture underlying modern LLMs and AI systems. These figures are national rather than Seattle-based, but they reflect why Sindhi professionals feel at home in the tech industry that defines the Seattle Eastside.
