Jain Community in Chicago
JSMC est. 1970 • ~1,900 families (largest Jain center in N. America) • North America’s first Jain Shikhar temple (1993) • 2025 JAINA Convention host (5,000+ attendees) • YJA Midwest born in Chicago (1991) • Vanam Jain menu in Schaumburg
Chicago is home to one of the most significant Jain communities in North America, anchored by the Jain Society of Metropolitan Chicago (JSMC) — North America’s first Jain temple with a Shikhar, built in 1993 on 15.4 acres in Bartlett, with ~1,900 member families, the largest membership of any Jain Center in North America. The community is concentrated in the Schaumburg–Bartlett–Hoffman Estates belt of the northwest suburbs, where Gujarati speakers number 25,000+ and the Golf Road corridor offers pure-vegetarian Indian restaurants (including Vanam, the only northwest suburbs restaurant with an explicit Jain menu), Indian grocery stores, and a community density that rivals New Jersey. Chicago hosted the 2025 JAINA Convention — 5,000+ attendees from 72 Jain Centers in 10 countries, described as “the largest Jain gathering outside India in recent memory.” For Jain immigrants, Chicago offers world-class institutional infrastructure that punches well above its population size.

Why Jain Families Choose Chicago
Chicago’s Jain community is built on one foundational advantage: JSMC. With ~1,900 member families, North America’s first Shikhar temple, and a multi-sectarian model that unites Shvetambara, Digambara, Sthanakvasi, and Shrimad worshippers under one roof, JSMC provides a level of institutional depth that few communities in the world can match outside India. A new immigrant arriving in Chicago does not have to build community from scratch — they plug into an organization that has been operating since 1970 and currently represents thousands of families.
Chicago’s northwest suburbs — the Schaumburg–Bartlett–Hoffman Estates belt — offer a self-sufficient Jain lifestyle: Vanam restaurant (explicit Jain menu in Schaumburg), Patel Brothers and Rajeshree Grocers on Golf Road, top-rated public schools, and a community density where you will meet Jain neighbors at the grocery store. The belt sits along the I-90/US Route 20 corridor with access to major employers: Motorola Solutions HQ is in Schaumburg, and the broader northwest suburbs have a deep tech and healthcare employer base.
The youth infrastructure is equally strong. Young Jains of America (YJA) was born in the Midwest in 1991, with Chicago as its epicenter. Today the Midwest region has 17 Sanghs and 5 College Chapters. The 2025 JAINA Convention in Schaumburg drew 550+ youth to the YJA Track alone. For Jain families with children and young adults, Chicago’s Jain ecosystem offers structured pathways from childhood Pathshala → YJA youth → JITO professional networking → JSMC community leadership.
Where Jain Families Live in Chicago
Chicago’s Jain community is concentrated in the northwest suburbs, not the city itself. Devon Avenue (West Ridge, Chicago proper) was historically the Indian cultural center and remains a destination for dining and specialty grocery, but Jains live and worship in the northwest suburbs. The northwest belt forms a continuous arc 20–30 miles from downtown Chicago.
Schaumburg — The Commercial Heart (5,491 Gujarati speakers (ACS 2022))
Schaumburg has the highest Gujarati/Jain density in the Chicago metro, and its Golf Road / Schaumburg Road corridor is the community’s daily infrastructure hub. Vanam (337 W Golf Rd) — the only northwest suburbs restaurant with an explicit Jain menu — is here. Patel Brothers Schaumburg (830 W Golf Rd) serves the community seven days a week. Schools in Schaumburg School District 54 and the area’s high schools are highly rated. Motorola Solutions’ headquarters in Schaumburg and the broader corporate park create strong tech employer proximity. Best overall choice for a Jain family relocating to Chicago: density, infrastructure, schools, and dining all in one zip code.
Bartlett — The Spiritual Heart (adjacent to 4,541 Gujarati speakers (ACS 2022))
JSMC’s 15.4-acre campus is in Bartlett, directly on Route 59. Families who want to live closest to the temple settle in Bartlett, Carol Stream, Bloomingdale, and Wayne — quiet, residential communities adjacent to the JSMC campus. This is the Wayne/Bloomingdale/Carol Stream PUMA with 4,541 Gujarati speakers (ACS 2022). Good for families who prioritize religious community life above all and want a short drive — or even a short walk — to Paryushana events.
Hoffman Estates — Strong Residential Option (4,048 Gujarati speakers (ACS 2022))
Hoffman Estates sits between Schaumburg and Bartlett — good schools, adjacent to the Golf Road commercial corridor, and home to Jai Hind Food Store (1027 W Golf Rd) for Indian groceries. More affordable than some Schaumburg areas while remaining fully within the northwest Jain belt. Many Jain families choose Hoffman Estates for the combination of community density and slightly more affordable housing.
Devon Avenue — Cultural Destination (not residential base)
Devon Avenue (2500–2700 W Devon, Chicago proper) remains Chicago’s “Little India” — relevant to Jains for weekend dining excursions (Arya Bhavan, Uru Swati), specialty grocery trips (Patel Brothers Devon flagship, the original 1974 location), and festival supply shopping (Kamdar Plaza for puja items). Devon is about 25–30 miles from Schaumburg — 35–45 minutes by car. It is a supplement to northwest suburbs life, not a replacement.
Jain Organizations in Chicago
Jain Society of Metropolitan Chicago (JSMC)
JSMC is the anchor institution for all Jain life in Chicago. Constituted January 11, 1970 (the idea initiated during Paryushana 1969 by a small group of Jain families), JSMC grew from fewer than 30 families to ~1,900 member families — the largest membership of any Jain Center in North America. In 1993 JSMC built the Shikhar temple, North America’s first. The 15.4-acre owned campus in Bartlett houses a large prayer hall (derasar), common area, well-equipped kitchen and dining hall, classrooms, and library.
JSMC’s defining characteristic is its multi-sectarian unity: Shvetambara, Digambara, Sthanakvasi, and Shrimad worshippers share the same campus and governance. This unity under one roof would be unusual even in India. The society is a JAINA member and hosted the 23rd Biennial JAINA Convention in 2025 (the fourth time the Chicago area has hosted). Young Jains of America (YJA) — Midwest Region
YJA began in the Midwest in 1991, with Chicago as its epicenter. Today the Midwest region has grown to 17 Sanghs and 5 College Chapters. The 10,000+ national member organization (ages 14–29) offers an Annual Midwest Retreat, the YJA Track at JAINA Convention (550+ attendees in 2025 Chicago), biennial national convention (800+ youth), Jainism 101 Video Series, the Aneka podcast, Jains In Action community service, College Application Mentorship, and Roommate Matching for relocating students. For Jain young adults moving to Chicago, YJA Midwest is the fastest path to a peer community. Contact: midwest@yja.org | Website: yja.org

Launched November 7, 2020, JITO USA Chicago is the professional networking arm for Chicago-area Jain entrepreneurs, business owners, and working professionals. Arts, Culture & Festivals
Paryushana & Das Lakshana — The Sacred Center of the Year
Paryushana is the most sacred Jain festival: 8 days for Shvetambara, 10 days (Das Lakshana Parva) for Digambara. JSMC’s multi-sectarian model means both are hosted on the same Bartlett campus. In 2025: Paryushana (Shvetambara) August 20–27; Das Lakshana Parva (Digambara) August 30–September 8. With ~1,900 member families, Paryushana attendance at JSMC is expected to number in the thousands over the festival period. Programs include daily prayers, scriptural discourses, meditation sessions, fasting programs, acts of community service, and Samvatsari (Kshamavani) celebrations — the forgiveness day when Jains greet each other with “Michhami Dukkadam.”
JAINA Convention 2025 — Chicago (Schaumburg)
The 23rd Biennial JAINA Convention was held July 3–6, 2025 at the Renaissance Schaumburg Convention Center and Hyatt Regency. 5,000+ attendees from 72 Jain Centers across North America, plus participants from 10 countries (India, UK, Germany, Kenya, and others) — described as “the largest Jain gathering outside India in recent memory.” Theme: “Unity in Diversity: A Path to Peace.” Highlights included the Temple Dwar Opening Ceremony with an Ashtapad replica of all 24 Tirthankaras, a Grand Cultural Procession, the YJA Track (550+ youth), a keynote by Jessica Cox, and the JAINA Ratna Award ceremony. Chicago has now hosted the JAINA Convention four times — the most of any metro — reflecting the city’s standing as one of North America’s leading Jain communities.
